Check the weather, but trust the birds.

I've got four dogs, and every morning I go outside to put the dogs into the yard, get them their water, etc. For the past few months (as is pretty typical this time of year in the Dallas area) it's often overcast and breezy. Sometimes the weather looks downright ominous.

For a while I would always check the weather at Weather.com to decide whether or not it was going to rain. If the probability was too high, I would keep the dogs inside. It was often the case, though, that it wouldn't rain even if Weather.com said it probably would.

At one point I made the correlation that when the birds were singing outside, chirping away and having a good ol' time in bird-like fashion, that it definitely would not rain -- no matter how bad it looked outside. However, if the birds were silent and the clouds looked heavy, it almost always did rain.

I still check Weather.com when it looks ominous, but it's the birds' opinions that I really trust.

The point of my story is that just because somebody claims to be an authority on a thing doesn't mean you shouldn't trust the knowledge you've personally acquired over the years. The web is chock full of self-proclaimed "gurus" on every imaginable subject (especially Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization!), and some of those guys do know a thing or two, but many are only as accurate as Weather.com (sorry Weather guys). They've got a few of the variables right, and won't always lead you astray, but if you base all of your actions on their information alone, you're probably missing out on a lot of success.

I'm writing this now because there are lots of "courses" out there that promise to teach you a step-by-step method for making money online or ranking in the search engines. I got a barrage of emails this morning from some marketers I follow about yet another "magic button" system that does all of the work for you while you sip martinis and eat bon-bons. Sorry if that last sentence wasn't clear, my eyes were rolling around in a reflexive response as I typed it.

I'm not saying there's nothing to be learned from some of these courses. There usually are some kernels of truth in them. The point in this blog post is that you should not take such information as absolute, unchangeable fact. What works today sometimes won't work next year (if it lasts that long).

So if in your personal experience you've found something else to be true, even if it completely contradicts what I or anyone else says, if it's working stick with it. Don't question the birds you've come to trust just because Weather.com says it's going to rain.

Keep up with what successful marketers and SEOs are saying, because it can often give new insights or add an angle to your own knowledge that you hadn't thought of, but if they claim that what you're doing won't last and yet it's been working for many months or even years -- who are you going to believe, them or your own eyes?

End the end, it boils down to this: check the weather, but trust the birds.

  1. Yes, you definitely have to be careful…anyone can find any article to support any crazy idea they may have. and if they can’t find one, they can always just post it. Very important to do your research from reputable sources and fact check…then use common sense. Thanks for the great post!

  2. Thanks for the great post. You really have a great way of making a point. Great post,I’m going to test this theory about the birds.I really like the point being made in this piece. There are so many self-appointed experts or authorities nowadays, but it doesn’t mean they are. The beauty of the internet is that it allows us to investigate ourselves, but we now also get a lot or false prophets.

  3. Great post,I’m going to test this theory about the birds.

  5. Off Page SEO is a pain in the ARSE* It pays off though in the long run! Speaking of birds we had a small earthquake here in Michigan yesterday. Shortly before the quake, my parrot began to have a fit! Trust The Birds!

    Cheers

  6. Hi Jon,

Thanks for the great post. You really have a great way of making a point. I agree there are way too many “self declared guru’s” out there. It is hard for a newbie to know what garbage and what is the real deal. I guess if it sounds to good to be true…

    Tammy

  7. Hi Jon,
isn’t it amazing that sometimes you can learn even a lot from something like a little bird, something so “normal” and without any skills about technologies etc?
I love birds and I watch the birds in my backyard whenever I find the time for that and they astound me every time on new.
Now Jon, I didn’t know you are living in the Dallas area, btw, greetings from Houston, but if even you are trusting more on the birds than on weather.com, then what do you think do things look like down here with the weather can change withing a few minutes so close to the Gulf?
Too many times we had a 20% chance of rain and it was pouring down as hell or 60% chance of rain was in the forecast and we had the most beautiful sunshine.

Now to come back to your point so I’m unfortunately not in the lucky situation to have a mentor nor could I pay for one but I am learning out of experience and from what I read in blogs like yours or forums…kind of me listening to what the birdies are singing.
Sometimes things do make sense to me, sometimes I get confused. Sometimes the more I read, the more I get confused and still I am trying to pick up ideas that have worked for more experienced guys than me and to take use of them.

  8. This is especially true in the internet marketing space. There’s such a low barrier to entry that anyone who can pull a page one ranking for keyword + city + zipcode is a self-declared guru. Although testing can be cumbersome, it’s all you have to go by, assuming you understand the fundamentals of how the web works.

  9. It’s quite true.. Sometimes birds are more trusted than weather forecast. Nice post!

  10. It’s so very true, on both account. The birds are usually right about the weather, and there are a lot of self proclaimed gurus out there that have barely made a cent online.

When you find that someone(s) online that resonates with you and is truly successful, follow them, model after them, listen to their coaching if they offer it, and value them and thank them!

  11. Another great way of learning all about this stuff is to get a mentor.

I got my first mentor a few weeks ago and the improvement in my success over these short weeks has been unreal.

When you have a mentor all the little questions that are not answered in any of the products or membership site that you are involved in can be answered on your live calls with them.

Keeping up to date is one of them

    Great post

    Glyn

  12. I have followed your advice and my local business website has moved to page one and is almost to position one which I am sure I will get. Right now I ‘own’ 5 of the page one positions!

    Thanks

  13. Hi Jonathan,

I think testing and research is important not just for internet marketing but for other careers as well. It’s necessary so internet marketers would know what strategies work for them or not.

  14. Jonathan —

My impression of the ezine directories is that they are looking for “how to” articles, and I’m fine with that.

However, if there is a directory that would accept it, I could also write various faith-based or politically conservative articles.

For example, I am familiar with various flaws in the theory of godless Darwinian organic evolution, and have counseled many teenagers over the years who haven’t known how to study Darwin and sift through what has been proven (micro evolution, adaptation to environment) and the giant leap from inorganic chemicals to the first life forms. Is that sort of topic — looking at specific aspects of theory and showing the intellectual holes in it — too heavy for these ezine directories?

Is it too heavy a topic for the ezines to show several comparisons between the Weimar Republic and its printing press money and the ultimate collapse of the Deutch mark, and our country’s wild spending/debt spree?

Do you know of any of these directories that accept that kind of content? If so, it would mean dozens of additional articles from me, over time.

    Thanks,

    Rex McBride

  15. Another great post Jonathan. I especially liked the analogy with the birds & the weather. You are 100% correct that you shouldn’t automatically believe everything everyone tells you. With online marketing you have to figure out what works for you and your specific website/niche. Just because something worked for someone else, it doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to get similar results.

  16. You have no idea how many times other marketers have told me something doesn’t work, when I’m earning good money from it. They’ve heard from someone else that a certain technique, or niche, or strategy, doesn’t work so they ignore it without testing.

Sometimes I’ll even offer someone advice based on what I’m doing for them to tell me I’m wrong because they read an article about it somewhere! There’s no helping some people :-)

  17. Jonathan,

4 dogs! I knew there was a reason I liked you, I have 4 dogs too.

But hey, I have been on your lists for a long time because your information is always timely, rock solid and backed with actual examples. Thanks for being one of the good guys.

  18. Hello John, Good post. It some times become so irrestible and we start testing and trying new products. I read somewhere internet marketing is like digging a well. You need to dig deep and be consistent to get the water. But it seldom happens. We keep digging a well, and after some time when we dont get water, we shift to some other place and start digging else where. And we continue doing the same thing. Everyone is aware of basic principle that digging deep a well will give water. But we do not do that and keep shifting our focus thereby we fail.

    Regards
    Madhan.

  19. Thanks Jon,

I tend to take what the so-called gurus tell us about is not working with a pinch of salt; because, usually they are trying to steer you towards their latest and greatest software or e-course they have for sale.

Maybe I’m being too cynical, but I believe these IM gurus will never s/tell us the whole story of how they make their money online (if indeed they truly do). They just string you along, but I guess that’s business.

However Jon, you are one of the few IM Marketers I do look up to and believe that you truly try to help out others.

    Thanks again,
    Jeremiah

  20. Agreed Jonathon,

If I am attracted by the sales hype and purchase a product, I have become quite ruthless in demanding a refund if it is old stuff re-hyped or falls short of the claims. If there is no trustworthy guarantee, I won’t touch it. With a guarantee I look but do not always keep. Another soapbox is the immediate upsell (s) which you will never see again. They tell me that I have just purchased an incomplete program.
If more buyers become discerning, this practice will die off as it becomes unprofitable.

  21. Jonathan …

You are one smart man! Thanks for your honesty! This is so true in so much that is on the internet … no matter what it is.

    Thanks so much!

  22. Jon

Speaking as a member of your link networks and owner of just about all your products and something of a follower i find your writings not just entertaining but thought provoking as well. I generally trust your judgement and have been around IM long enough to spot the hype and the fake, however sometimes i will buy into various courses as much to prove myself right as anything. Another victim of the IM sales machine, perhaps.

Your post as always brings some level headedness to this arena and I’m in the process of modelling my business in the same way as you seem to drive yours. Currently I’m what you might call a Niche marketer with a modicum of success but going it alone is hard work, however i have started seeing some lights :) The point is after 4 years consistent activity and 12 years actual involvement with the ‘Home business & Internet Marketing’ market as a gullible customer it is my intention to get involved in the IM niche as perhaps an antidote to hype.

I thank you sincerely for being possibly the one successful marketer that can be at least trusted (see Jon’s article writing offer to see how he cares about his subscribers)! Thanks again for some sensible writing.

    Regards
    Iain

  23. SEO is a strange subject as there are no college courses that can prepare you for the constantly changing search engine rules. You just have to keep your ear to the ground and trust your instincts. Its a cat and mouse game at best.

  24. From along time I didn’t read a so deep, nice and true article. Thank you and be blessed!

  25. Hi Jon,

My primary business is in offering rewriting services for PLR articles to create unique content as not everyone finds automated content spinners suitable. I’m also skirting the edges of internet marketing and having a moderate rate of success.

What is quite bemusing however is that 99% of “business opportunities” trumpeted by internet marketers is on “how To Run an Internet Business.”

I’m still trying to figure out the answer to the conundrum … if everyone is learning how to sell, who’s doing the buying?

Meanwhile, I do subscribe to the philosphy that “If you chase two rabbits, you will lose them both.”

…which ties in nicely with what you have said … chasing too many “how-tos” leads not to pegging the prize, but to confusion.

    Regards, DJ

  26. Hi Jon,
I just got TBS and i must say it’s one of the ‘missing link’ in my article marketing journey. Your post is very encouraging to me. Thanks and it reminds me that i should trust what i had learnt..and especially from you for the past months of reading your emails and blogs..

    Tim

  27. Great article and very useful advice to live by online as far as running an e-business is concerned. The web is filled with self-proclaimed gurus who pretend knowing everything.

  28. Yes, Learning to trust what you know and sense around you is so important. Those birds are surviving and thriving because they have learned to pay attention to the signs that we often overlook.

When we spend more time outdoors we become attuned to some of the basic laws of the natural world. That sensitivity can truly help us in many ways in the business world too.

Example. Leading a group of adults on a nature walk, I began to hasten our return to the picnic shelter, saying something like “Its going to rain soon, so let’s head back.” No sooner were we under the roof than the rain began to pour upon us. One otherwise intelligent adult said, “How on earth did you know it was going to rain just then?” Too many indoor hours and too much insulation from awareness had blinded this person’s senses to many obvious signs.

Time to review the signs in our marketing world with that same kind of attention and sensitivity. Trust your senses and experience. Learn from others, but rely on your own choices.

  29. I totally agree. When I first ventured into Internet Marketing, there were tonnes and tonnes of materials and everybody was claiming to be ‘gurus’. End of the day, we need to filter what works and what doesn’t =)

    Great post!

  30. Right on. One thing certain about nature is it does what it does and has no agenda. Marketers, politicians etc almost always have an agenda.

There are things to be learned from those who have gone before but somehow many get caught up in the following and not the doing. I have noticed that many ‘gurus” have a course to teach me all I need to know about IM, email, traffic, list building so I shouldn’t need anything else. Then I get an email from them promoting someone else course about the same topic. If the first guru taught me everything I need to know why would they then promote another? I try to image a Toyota Sales Associate sending out letters to his or her client list, “My friend John Doe over at Honda got the new line in, you should really head over there for the 72 hour weekend blowout.”

  31. You are absolutely right. There are toooooo many self proclaimed experts. I am doing Internet marketing for 2 and a half years, and I have good and raising results last couple of months. I read so many ebooks and websites and in on moment I get a big headache. There are only couple of good internet marketer that I follow and respect, and You are one of them. Always good information You provide ( star wars). Lukas

ps. your SST wast the first effective “software” which made me first dollars online. shame that does not work any more to track adsense cliks…..

  32. Look what people DO not just what they SAY. It’s always a good indication.

  33. Hi Jonathan,

Great, good old common sense post and glad to hear you have four dogs. Good friends to share your life with.

  34. Thanks for the great post Jon, you’re the one “guru” I shall never unsubscribe from.

Why? because what you say is always honest and you’re not out just to take people’s money. Oh, and your software is pretty good too!

  35. Great post Jon..

I have heard so many noobs say “I wish I had somebody to take me by the hand and show me step by step how to make money on-line” The thing of it is, there is no one right way to do IM.

Everybody has to find what works for them… rinse then repeat.

There are a ton of systems out there that do work, but not necessarily for EVERYONE!

I try to read (notice how I said read and not buy) whatever I can that’s out there. Some of the content is good while some of it is just plain garbage. But the ironic thing about this is, I have picked up a couple little tid-bits here and there from some of the garbage and incorporated them into something that I was working on and they helped!

The one way to succeed in IM is to find a system for yourself and repeat.

You ARE going to have failure, but the best thing about failure in the IM world is the knowledge that you gain from it.

Keep up the great posts Jon and keep adding features to that spinner of yours, I’m loving it!…lol

  36. Jon,

That’s one of the funniest but most insightful things I’ve read in a long time man. Kudos!

  37. Great point and one that we all tend to forget with all the hype that is continually built up online. I love the previous statement here about “focus on the focus”, also great advice.

In addition to the birds, it reminds me of something I learned when I got my pilot’s license. You frequently need to know which way the wind is blowing, and when you are flying at 3000 feet going 135 mph, you can’t just stick your hand out the window. If the area you are over is farmland, watch for cows — if the wind is strong enough to take notice of, cows will face their back side into the wind, regardless of which way the FAA says the wind is blowing.

  38. That’s true Jon, I spent years online before coming to realise exactly what you are saying.
What you experience yourself is the best that can lead you to long term success.

    Thanks for all.

  39. Thanks Jonathan for such a timely blog post. As I logged into my Gmail account this evening I could count at least 10 new emails I have received that talks about the newest programs, the most wicked traffic generation methods never seem before etc, etc. I’m pretty new to this IM game. Truth be told I’m just looking, just seriously looking for a system that I CAN WORK to me just $1 a day! If I can find one such system, I will cancel ALL my subscriptions to all these emails bar TBS and throw my heart, soul and spirit into it.

But I haven’t found it and guess what…
    I’m still searching….

And I will keep your advice close to my heart.

    To your success Jon

    Jason Strider

  40. Hi Jonathan,
You are right, every day my email is filled with new launches, the best that can make you money… As a newbie, I get overwhelmed and confused which one can I trust. If you don’t have someone you believe, you will totally be going forward and backwards.
It is important to believe and have confidence in what you know and it is working for you…
    Thanks for the article.

  41. Hi Jonathan

Very interesting story, I never knew that about the birds but it definitely applies when it comes to trusting your own intuition. Yes it is good to listen to some of the experts but it is important to do what you feel works best for you, and stay focused it is too easy to get lead astray.

    Michelle Jayes

  42. What a wonderful post, however as a resident from the northwest of the United States, we learned a -looooooooong time ago not to trust our weather guys. Even they, with their vast tools and knowledge about the weather, are only right a portion of the time. It is funny to hear them say..partially sunny with a chance of rain..( btw that is our forecast for 9 months of the year up here)

If I could, I would to add to your post with a commentary that I do believe is relevant. Instead of just trusting the bird, we should adopt a bird like mentality and actually be the bird building a nest. Birds will often take many pieces of different materials to build there nest. And we should try to do the same, the nest that we build will reflect the many pieces that we have gathered.

I appreciate you taking the time to create this post, and look forward to reading more. I have enjoyed your expertise and do value you as a great resource. Keep it up!

  43. Thanks Jonathan,
So very true. Just getting into nature will sometimes give you clarity. Everyone is the next guru. Also it’s good to remember it’s quality not quantity, be authentic.

  44. Hey, I love this post! There is a ton of information out there as far as succeeding with your online marketing efforts. I like the point that Wes brought up to “focus on the focus”.

Between getting distracted with the latest greatest system and simply not implementing tried and true tactics, many folks just end up frustrated and give up.

    Thanks Jon!
    Chris..

  45. Awesome post Jon, I too have been making money online since April of 2008. Not with SEO but another endeavor I came across. I too was mentored by someone and then put my own spin on things. I get emails every day promising me loads of money in no time flat by joining this or buying this. Ive learned over the years that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  46. A great metaphor.

Weather.com is a big time weather Guru whose focus is on a country wide area while the bird is the small time local weather guru that is focusing just on your area.

Check the weather, but trust the birds = Check the generics, but trust the specialized.

There are more unrecognized talents than the Big n Famous, who may be better for what you are seeking.

    Thank you for your time.

  47. Thank you, Jon, for this insightful post. It’s funny, over a year ago I attended a 5 week seminar online with a “not so well known” marketer, but this guys is really good. He really knows his stuff and is a full-time IMer. He gave us some solid content and training…around 10 hours or personal training for around $300. Now there is a new launch going out and everything we learned from this guy is being said by this other guy! Some of the same referenced sites about outsourcing and finding business.

I’m coming to the realization, that everything we need to know to be successful on the Net is out there…and mostly for free. However, getting good training from a person who’s been there is key to help not make the same mistakes and be less costly. It’s like college, it’s expensive, but it helps teach people how to fish and not make stupid mistakes.

    Thanks again.
    Brad

  48. A true pearl of Wisdom! My business is really starting to grow now, and not coincidentally this comes after getting off the “Latest Shiny Object” merry-go-round and picking a couple of things that work and driving forward with those. Focus on a single thing or two at most and monitor what’s happening but learn from the compelling sales presentations, but don’t jump around too much.
Thanks again for sharing real usable content.

  49. I couldn’t agree more Jon. I spent most of the weekend reading a Google SEO ebook and was amazed at some of the things said, that just were not true in my case.

However, I found one paragraph in the 160+ page book that was worth it’s weight in gold. (I’m not telling.) :)

Nothing beats the experience of failure. Fail enough times, and you’ll eventually succeed. Keep an open mind, test new ideas and trust your own data.

  50. Very true. There is a lot of hype and misinformation when it comes to internet marketing – and especially SEO.

  51. I think you make a valid point there. If you are doing something and it has worked for you for sometime, I think you might be foolish to just go and switch it because a guru tells you you should. A lot of them make some great points and I think it would be wise to listen to them but unless you are not getting any results, why would you want to switch? Thanks.

  52. That was an inspiring post. It relates to the time when the tsunamis, earthquakes or other disasters come, ti seems like some animals can know in advance.

Everything isn’t predicted accurately like people often claim.

  53. Yeah Jon you made a point there. I have tried a lot of those stuff from the so called Gurus. Sometimes I discovered that they are just hype and nothing new. however there are real good stuff but then the bring in a novelty and complement it with an already existing fact, tool or software if you like. All said. Don’t rely on everything you come across on the internet stick to things that work and discard the junk.

  54. Jonathan, thanks for being one of the birds!

  55. Hi Jon,

It was only when I stopped following all the advice ( as opposed to ‘listening’ for nuggets of information) that I started to make enough money to quit the day job.

It has taken me years to reach this mindset – and thank heavens for that! As there are 100x more bogus ‘gurus’ on the web today than when I first started!

  56. Hey Johnathan.

So many people listen to the sage advice of ‘just one guy’ and I concur, they miss out on a lot of success.

I’ve been doing IM for 9 days – 9!!! and yet already I have regulars in forums asking ME for advice. Why? Because I grab what works for me and toss what doesn’t. I don’t believe that there is a single strategy to success.

I followed an awesome course (free btw) but it was lacking, so I found some tools (Market Samurai, The Best Spinner, etc) that supplemented the learning from the course. To that I then added a host of WP tutorial video’s, as I had no idea when it came to building websites.

All in all after 9 days I have a great niche, with non-competitive keywords, a site that is ranked and looks ‘okay’ (I still need to pretty it up a lot!) and I’m getting my first visitors. When I post these results, even veteran IMers are shocked. But you know what?

The guru’s (the people who actually should be considered that) smile at me and say ‘You’ll do.’

That, more than anything else, tells me I’m on the right track for success.

  57. So true! As a newbie it is very frustrating because although I feel I’ve found a solid mentor program, well known names email with the latest and greatest every day. I’ve bought a few, and from what I’ve learned from my mentor can now spot what is BASICALLY true information, but is not the WHOLE truth about what it will take to be successful. They are often bare bones summations of steps to IM, BUT TO SUCCEED you ‘just need’ this tool ($97), and this tool ($159) and maybe this tool ($297). ha.

And the basic $49 summation that promised easy riches with no more money spent will never allow someone to succeed because so much is left out.

I hate refunding but am now doing so if the product is BS. I also know I need to buy and look at something before even THINKING about promoting it as an affiliate because there’s so much garbage behind the fancy sales pitch.

  58. Good point Jonathan, and very true.

Just last year there were a couple of product launches for software that let you spy on your competitors adwords accounts.

Now that Google have changed the whole structure of their search results and adwords delivery I wonder if these software programmes are still working?

  59. Agreed Jon.. I recently posted a video by Google’s own Matt Cutts that disbanded a lot of the myths about SEO. It was an eye opener for me to say the least. In short… WordPress is great and naturally written content rules. Everything else will fall into place.

    Dave

  60. Thank`s Johnathan.

This was a deep saying from my absolute favorite marketer.
I am one of those who are really sick and tired of stumbling upon scams all the time.
95% of all “opportunities online”really sucks.

  61. Excellent post. So often we forget to trust ourselves, our own instincts, our own experience, our own knowledge. Thanks for the reminder that this is true online also!

  62. Hi Jon
You are very right. I’d like to add that you should not only trust the instinctive experience you have acquired, but you have to learn to interpret the data you are getting (in your case: you had to learn to interpret the bird’s songs)
Often what you learn can be the opposite of conventional wisdom.
    One example:
It it widely believed, that you cannot make sales from visitors searching for keyword + “free”.
In general this is true but with my clickbank analytics tool I found out that in spite of that I had quite a lot of sales for exactly that: keyword + free. How comes? I had to learn that if you are promoting a niche product that is not found elsewhere for free and you can explain to your visitors why it is not free and that it is worth it’s money you can actually make a lot of sales for the search term term “product name + free”.
I had to find out that myself and not believe the “weather.com guys” aka Internet gurus that you won’t make sales from keyword kombinations with free…

    Mike

  63. Jon,

I had always heard that this method of checking the weather is true. However, I have never taken the time to test it for myself.

Just as the birds are more sensitive to the weather because the are out there every day doing it, the ones making money online and getting ranked well do seem to be more credible.

    Thanks again Jon.

  64. Agree, but you have to stay away from internet marketing forums, there is some really shady stuff going on in some of those places

  65. Jon, thanks for your post. I’ve learned a lot from your blog and your products. This post really struck a chord with me because I have to fight every single day to remain focused on my system that puts money into my account and not get distracted with all the “latest and greatest” systems that seem ten times more easier/profitable. gotta “focus on the focus”, as my friend Eric Louviere says.

  66. Hey John, great post. I really think your are dead right. I am doing 5 figures and i started about 2 years ago and I am doing exactly as you say. Learn from someone and add my experience to do something out of mainstream. It really helps!
