Using videos as an affiliate marketing tool.

January 4, 2007

My previous case study showed that I could drive traffic to my content sites very easily using the methods outlined in my new Video Traffic Power package, but I wanted to know if I could use videos to directly sell affiliate products as well.

To test this idea, I just grabbed a big market out of the air (insurance) and did a search on Google for insurance affiliate programs. I came across a site that sold auto insurance and had an affiliate program for that, so I signed up.

Then I had to decide what kind of video I would create that was at least somewhat related to auto insurance. I created an eye catching short video (only about a minute and a half), and on the end of the video put a call to action to get people to go to a domain of mine that did nothing other than redirect the visitor to the affiliate site.

Two days (and about 7,000 views of the video) later, I had already made two sales.

That was a real eye-opener for me! If I could make two sales in two days from one video, what were the possibilities if I created dozens of short videos like that and distributed them? Creating the video was easy, and only took about 30 minutes.

So now I've created a second video, and will be creating more going forward. As the results come in, I'll post them here.

For all of the details on how I created the videos and got so many views so fast, see Video Traffic Power.

    Hi Jonathan,

Just bought it. Was looking into this before and I believe it's the way of 2007.

That affiliateprogram is one of Pay per Sale wouldn't it be better to have a Cost Per Lead?

Hi Jon, as usual you post relevant information on methods and products you have tested yourself. Good work!

Interesting Blog Jonathan, but you left out half the story. How did you get your 7000 views?

    Regards

    ok
where do you get the pics for the little videos?

  5. Philip on January 5th, 2007 10:55 am

Great Jon, just what the small marketer needs, a way to get traffic at little or no cost. The big question is how did you get 7000 views in 2 days?
I posted videos and was lucky to get 100 views in 30 days.

Tell us how you got 7000 views in 2 days.

    Johnathan,

    This is really, really interesting.

I've been dabbling with this concept of using images to create traffic generating videos for some time now.

I uploaded a test video to Google. My views are nowhere near your figures, but I continue to get 1 or two sign ups every other day or so.

    Thanks for the tips

    Stewart

It seems to me that 7000 views and only 2 sales is a bad conversion. If you get 7000 views on something I'd hope you would convert better than that.

  9. Philip on January 5th, 2007 11:12 am

One more question, what is the URL to that insurance video?

    Thanks Jon.

  10. Jonathan Leger on January 5th, 2007 12:01 pm

    Tim:

Keep in mind, that's 7,000 views of the video, not of the site. That 7,000 views sent enough people to the insurance site to convert 2 people. The conversion rate of the site is pretty good.

Remember, people are watching videos for entertainment, and not to be sold. The same is true for television commercials. So conversion rates from viewers to sales will be lower.

Keep in mind, too, that videos are great for branding your domain name.

    Hi Jon,

    Hi

I got Video Traffic Power and created a little video which is linked to a squeeze page. I will post if there is any success in sales or subscribers.

    Thanks

    Hello Jonathan
Been reading your blog for some time because I really do believe that one can drive a lot of traffic to a website.
My biggest problem is the creativeity - or the lack of it. Althou I and probably a lot of people do have a lot of software programs - I am convinved that it takes a lot more than 30 minutes to create a video that is eye catching. I am more than sure that you must have a flair in creating video.
Is it really that easy to create Video that easily and even with vety basic equipment ?

I mean the videos you did of the Cat or the one about the dog surely must have taken you a lot more than at least a few hours to get right?

Thansk for the series - very interesting

I'm really interested in the Affilaite Marketing aspect of using videos and enjoyed your demo. I just wonder if a non tech person can use your stuff.

Keep us posted for bigger results

  16. Day Online Trading on January 5th, 2007 9:42 pm

I tend to agree with Hamant's feelings. You are a very talented person, who is full of good ideas. I also struggle to come up with ideas and have a lot of difficulty on putting them into reality, like creating pictures, videos, salespages, etc. That is the hard part !

  17. Paul Kleinmeulman on January 6th, 2007 6:44 am

I think your blog is great. I love how you always put your results down but yes please share the video as I would love to see what you created.

    Sincerely,

  18. Arcade Game Diva on January 6th, 2007 10:45 am

    Jon,

I agree with Paul Kleinmeulman and Robert…

To really complete your post about your results, so far, from creating a video to generate affiliate sales, please show us the short insurance video used in your 'test'.

I, for one, would love to see the video you created. I have purchased many of your programs and products over the years, and I follow your blog. I'm certain MORE evidence (ie. showing the video) will push a lot of people sitting on the fence into investing in your latest report about how to do this - Video Traffic Power.

Oh yeah, as a busy webmistress myself I must commend you on keeping this blog going with regular, informative posts. Great job, Jon.

    I thinks it's interesting.i wonder how to do that…

    Jonathan,

Thanks for the incredible insight on making videos. I'm definetely going to impliment them onto my site, although it may be harder for me to get as many fews as you did because of my subject matter. However, any increase is good and will pay off in the end!

    Hi Jon,

Once again, its great to see more top quality skills and tactics being shared by you. I have a copy of your Instant Article Wizard, its makes things so much easier. I will be testing out some videos for affiliate programs. And would also appreciate if you would give us a glimse of you video or even a sample.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

  22. James Schramko on February 6th, 2007 6:33 am

    Jon,

I admire your constant testing of new ideas. It is a great way to educate and sell at the same time.

Would you post the example insurance video so we can see what you do?

I am looking forward to your next batch of results.

    Regards

    James

  23. Pete on February 8th, 2007 7:11 am

    Jonathan,

I'm already on your list but now you want me to enter my email again via your videotrafficepower.com squeeze page, will I get double emails from you?

  24. Jonathan Leger on February 8th, 2007 8:34 am

    Pete:

Nope, it won't put you in the list twice.

  25. Barrett on March 15th, 2007 2:46 pm

So, 2+ months later you still haven't posted a link to the final product (not the one you're selling; the vidio itself). Are you ashamed of it?

  26. Jonathan Leger on March 15th, 2007 3:50 pm

Hardly. I'm very proud of how well it's done, and you can read about how to duplicate my success in the report that comes with Video Traffic Power.
