What would you ask an AdSense genius?

January 25, 2007

Okay, so Joel Comm is a much better looking guy than this dude, but he is certainly a "mad scientist" when it comes to AdSense! Joel has come up with some fantastic programs for skyrocketing his AdSense income, and he doesn't mind telling you that he cashes $25,000 checks from AdSense every month.

Since AdSense was the second biggest subject requested that I talk about in 2007, I thought it only fitting that I bring Joel in and let him answer all of your questions about the subject.

I'll be interviewing him Wednesday, January 31st, at 2 PM CST / 3 PM EST. Since my last chat was a bit chaotic when people had an "open mic" to ask whatever they wanted, I'm limiting this chat to just the questions I collect ahead of time. So get your questions in now if you want them answered.

What do you want to know about AdSense? Post your questions in the comments to this post, and I'll ask Joel as many of them as I can in one hour next Wednesday.

I'll announce the chat instructions to my list, so be sure to join if you want to be a part of the chat.

Hi Jonathan - I would like to know if Joel earns his large adsense income by running a couple of sites which may have 100's of pages or lots of smaller sites in tight niche areas. His comments and recommendations on this would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for all your great infomation Jonathan.

    * How many articles or blogpost should you at least do before starting to earn money?

    * How many sites at least do you recommend in order to make real money?

    Hi,
Good idea J.L. I have Joels templates and I am member of ArticleUnderground sute. I post lot's of original articles per month and I always link every page on Mikes blog with high PR. Also, social bookmarking and video advertising on Google. My result is very small. I don't know why, maybe it takes time.I think I'm doing everything right.Ads adjusted by Joel, niche also, original content, advertising? My site is 3 months old.
I am making a mini net site with subdomains … Iam really trying out there and result is not very good. Am I missing something?

I would love to ask Joel whether his templates violate the AdSense program policy that prohibits displaying AdSense on pages created solely for the purpose of displaying ads. I asked him this directly in a comment on his blog but he never responded. I also wrote to Adsense help about this issue and they warned me against using any such third party software. To read my blog post on the subject, click on my name hyperlink.

Here are some ideas for questions:

You said: "he cashes $25,000 checks from AdSense every month."

How many different sites produce this income ?
How many pages per site (or alltogether) ?
How many page views and clicks (as reported in google adsense report) ?
What are the minimum and maximum payment per click (excluding the 10% most expensive clicks and the 10% cheapest clicks) ?
How old are the sites ?
For a completely new site, after how many weeks does he get significant income (income in the same range as the average income for all other sites of the same category)
How may hours in average did he work to create a new site, and how many hours in average does he spend for monthly maintenance ? (himself or his coworkers)

Orders of magnitude are sufficient. The point is not to violate google rules. Just to understand how these results are achieved.

Can we see samples of his sites (about 5)

Is it worthwhile to use section targeting ?
    ()

Does he use keywords in url (eg: mysite.htm?param=my keyword)

What criteria does he use to decide that a new page is worthwhile to make ? (eg: maximum nb of results in Google, KEI, Nb of overture searches per month…)

Can he describe his linking strategy for a new site

    Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for setting this up. There's so much to learn from gurus like yourself and Joel.

Here are my questions for Joel:

Q1: Besides AdSense, many of us are also doing Affiliate Marketing. What ratio of AdSense to AM ads would you recommend as a good mix within the same site?

Q2: And Is it a good idea to diversify both AdSense and AM in a site, i.e. sell other related items / services instead of sticking to one item? If yes, to what extent should we diversify?

Q3: I seem to be in a niche market which is *too niche*. And one can only list a limited number of meta keywords (about 20 to 25). So I get quite a bit of unrelated AdSense ads. Therefore, no clicks. :-( If I leave out some of the more generic keywords, I fear I may not be fully accessing my target market. Any advice?

Q4: Is there a simple and easy way to prevent the appearance of AdSense ads for keywords that are spelt the same way but have different meanings? E.g. Palm trees and Palm OS; Hand analysis and Hand surgery. (I find this problem particularly annoying.)

Q5: Can you comment on Google's latest ruling that PPC ads from other companies CANNOT be made to look the same way as any AdSense ads, or Google will penalise the publisher for doing so?

Q6: Other than AdSense, are there any good PPC plans that publishers can use?

Thanks, Jonathan! Hope the session goes well!

BTW, you have a great blog!

    Hi Jon,

Jon here again, I have about 23 sites at presentt but
one established PR4 authority site that nets just under $150.00 a month out of 198 page site at
www.avidtech.com.au and it has taken a ling time to get this turnover and reasonable CTR. I am not relying on the adsense revenue since I only wanted to cover the cost of hosting and a new site makeover which will cost a lot of money.

I would like to know what can be done to improve my cllicks and also should I consider doing pages that are a bit off topic but provide higher pay per clicks. My site gets good traffic daily 600+ uniques
    and around 50 revisits…

Hope there is a way to make it pay to have the site revuit, I have no illusions of $25k a month from a million subdomains etc, I simply do not have time for VRE bit do have a lot of different portal sites for info and fun that do not get that much traffic but have great CTR for the small number of visitors which I need time to get links for more traffic.
    cheers
    From Aistralia on Australia Day

My question is a simple one. What is an effective way to get started making money with AdSense?

  10. James on January 26th, 2007 8:25 am

Is it better to build one site and add content to it or building a network of different sites

    Jonathan:
I have 20 active sites but only two seem to be getting any adsense income, and those two are linked to Adword Campaigns.

What good does it do to have all of these adsense pages if no one comes to your site?

How do you get people to your sites so they will click on your adsense ads?

    Thanks

  12. Christine on January 26th, 2007 9:41 am

How do you fix smart pricing?

Is adsense even a a good option to monetize a site anymore?

Here are my AdSense questions for Joel Comm -

    1) How can I get lots of traffic to my AdSense sites?
    2) What's the best page layout for getting a high CTR while also getting good search engine ranking?
    3) Is it advisable to open AdSense clicks in a new window so you don't lose your visitor after a single click?
    4) What's the best source of content for AdSense sites?
    5) What's your opinion of creating subdomains for various keywords?
    6) Should I create a large site, based upon keyword subdomains, or should I create several separate sites?

How do you set up an autoresponder to drip posts to your website?

Is there a particular autoresponder that is better at this?

I think Aramyus wants to know the same things I do and I would like to repeat the ones that interest me the most:
How many different sites produce this income ?
How many pages per site (or alltogether) ?
How old are the sites ?
For a completely new site, after how many weeks does he get significant income (income in the same range as the average income for all other sites of the same category)
How may hours in average did he work to create a new site, and how many hours in average does he spend for monthly maintenance ? (himself or his coworkers)

Can he describe his linking strategy for a new site

  17. Charles Brown on January 26th, 2007 12:00 pm

I've heard a lot of differing opinions on the "deep" vs "wide" strategies.

"Deep," meaning a single or a very few related blogs (or sites) that you constantly add new material to, establish as many as possilbe links toward and generally develop a loyal readership to.

In contrast, the "wide" strategy builds about three or four new sites or blogs each week, which target narrow niches and underserved key words, in order to dominate what traffic there is on this subject.

I am personally inclined toward the deep strategy, but should I possibly be targeting more subjects as well?

  18. Tudor Mateescu on January 26th, 2007 1:14 pm

Question: How can you protect from invalid clicks / sabotage?

  19. Gary Smith on January 26th, 2007 5:06 pm

I am interested in the same question that Tudor Mateescu asked.

Sometime ago I had a Community website where I published tutorials for using Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Eventually I built up a relatively sizable community and I started doing a little online comic type skit.

My adsense account got cancelled but I got really busy with my job at the time so I didn't really notice since I wasn't able to keep up with the website.

In more recent months I was trying to work on getting back with Adsense only I had no idea that I was actually banned by Adsense for reasons they said a Third Party Tool was used to generate clicks.

So in an effort to try and become an adsense member again I wondered, How can you protect from invalid clicks?

  20. Lisa on January 26th, 2007 9:35 pm

Funny timing, yesterday Adsense sent me an email that basically said my website was involved in click fraud. I laughed. I made a whopping $1 so far this month! Apparently, they won't tell you how they know. So, my question is how do they know? And how can you prove you are innocent?

    Hi Jonathan,

I would like to ask Joel, some insights on hosting all our websites. I heard recently something about C Class IP and best ways to use it for maximising Adsense revenue.

    Hello,

As my website is about interior design, I wanted to know what you think about adsense and ebay affiliate program working together?
Do you think building an ebay store, free content will bring more traffic and more money without affecting my adsense revenus?
What do you think about this tool for website translation http://www.translationgold.com

    Thanks for your response

  23. George on January 27th, 2007 3:37 am

Google favours older sites, and bigger sites, seems two good reasons for start ups like me to avoid them. Do you agree?

  24. Rolf - AudioBooksCorner on January 27th, 2007 4:20 am

I'm running the website and I'm wondering if adding Adsense to such a site makes sense or if I have toexpect that competitors will use my site to place their Adword Ads and syphon traffic away from me. Selling the audio books might be more profitable than gettin a few dollars for Adsense?

  25. Demis on January 28th, 2007 6:25 am

How do I get more for a click?

Is it good to combine adsense with ebay products or will this drop my profit?

If I get lower clicks to website A because it has more traffic will my webite B also get punished?
