66 visitors, 13 downloads, 3 sales, $99

September 4, 2008

Not excited by the prospect of making $99 in a month? You should be. Why do I say that, and what did I do to make my brand new, 2 page web site earn about a hundred bucks in one month? Let me tell you.

Why You Should Be Interested

First of all, to build your enthusiasm for the results of this case study, let me lay out a few figures that can be derived from 66 visitors, 13 downloads, 3 sales and $99.

$99 from 66 visitors is $1.50 per visitor.

Think about that. On a great day you'll earn $1.50 per click from AdSense ads on a page, but even with a good click-through rate of 10%, you need 10 visitors to earn that $1.50. That means you're really only earning 15 cents per visitor on average. The methods I used for this case study earned 10 times that per-visitor value.

3 sales from 66 visitors is a 4.5% conversion rate.

A 4.5% conversion rate is great for an affiliate product (which is what was used in this case study). It's far better when you consider that the product was a free software download that the user had to choose to register for a fee — which is when I got paid. Conversion rates for software registration are typically far lower than conversion rates for pay-first products. But in this case, of the 13 people who downloaded the software in the last month, 3 people bought. That's 23%! Very nice indeed.

It only took 6 weeks to get a #3 ranking in Google for the keywords that earned the $99.

Yup, a mere six weeks after putting the brand-new, 2 page case study site into the 3WayLinks Network, I had a #3 ranking in Google for my chosen keywords.

How I Did It

Now to get to heart of the matter: how did I do it? It's actually very simple.

  1. I created a simple 2 page site that pitched the product and provided a link to download the software.
  2. I put the site in the 3WayLinks network, using the name of the product as my primary keywords.
  3. I gave the site a title that looks like this: [PRODUCT NAME] - GET IT FREE! — Do you see why a title like that will draw clicks from the searchers who might otherwise have clicked on the #1 result instead?

Why It Works

Ranking for the name of a product is a great way to earn easy affiliate commissions. The reasons for this are threefold.

  1. Conversion rates are higher.

If somebody is searching for the specific name of a product in Google, they are obviously much more interested in the product, and therefore are a lot easier to sell the product to.

  2. Competition is lower.

If you look for software products (or other digital products) that aren't immensely popular, you'll find that there's not much competition for the product name in Google. That means it's really easy to rank for the name of the product — and fast.

  3. It's easy to "rinse and repeat."

Since the web site is incredibly simple to build (2 pages, no fancy graphics or expensive templates), it's also very easy to duplicate. Just find another product to create a site around and repeat the process over and over again.

3WayLinks lets you put 50 web sites in your account. Think about that: if you can build 50 sites that, on average, earn a target goal of $3 a day, that's $4,500 a month, or $54,000 a year — on autopilot.

Where can you find such digital products whose product name you can rank for? They're all over the place: ClickBank, PayDotCom, and RegSoft are all loaded with software and digital products that you can be an affiliate for. Create the sites, drop them into 3WayLinks (or 1WayLinks.net, which is also proving incredibly successful) and wait for the commissions to arrive.

To find out how competitive the keywords are for the product names, just go to Google's keyword tool and do an "Exact" match search for the product name. Look for product names that get some searches, but not a lot.

My case study site targets a product name that only gets 210 searches a month, according to Google's keyword tool. The products that only get a few searches don't have anywhere near the competition, which means it's a lot easier to rank for the product names.

Wouldn't the 'GET IT FREE' phrase drive lots of unqualified leads? Are you saying you got a 4.5% conversion rate on natural search traffic when the visitors were coming to the site expecting something free?

  2. Jonathan Leger on September 4th, 2008 3:23 pm

    George:

Under other circumstances that would be true. In this case, though, since people are searching for a specific product name, it works to drive more qualified leads. And it's true, because the download is free — only the registered version costs money.

    Jon,

Thanks for this Post! It came at a great time. I have been doing AdSense for a while but I have been putting together a new affiliate site for me to branch out on. I was wondering what else I needed to do.

    Thanks! Now I know.

Thanks for sharing. I wonder how long it took. You manage to put up 1 each day for a month, next month you have ~$3000. Sounds promising :)

  5. Boston on September 4th, 2008 3:29 pm

Why do you say this is for digital products? Can't it be for physical ones, too?

  6. Brian on September 4th, 2008 3:31 pm

This looks very simple and easily scalable. Is this the first site you tried doing this on, or have you had repeated success with this same type of promotion? Also, was the 3 way link network the only thing you used to promote your site?

    Hi Jonathan

    Thanks for another great post.

Couldn't you please give a link to your site? I have a hard time understanding the "get it free" and people having to pay for the software.

  8. Jonathan Leger on September 4th, 2008 3:32 pm

    Boston:

You can do the same thing for physical products, sure. I prefer digital products because the commission rate tends to be much higher as there are no physical costs involved.

  9. Jonathan Leger on September 4th, 2008 3:33 pm

    Britt:

I can't give the link to the site since it's in the 3WayLinks network and it violates my terms of service to publicly declare what sites are in the network — for security reasons.

  10. Chuck on September 4th, 2008 3:33 pm

What I don't understand is…was the domain name the product name? Or was this just the keyword the domain was optimized for?

  13. SAT Essay on September 4th, 2008 3:34 pm

Great strategy. I'd like to know is this something that mostly works for software when you can give away a free download or can it also work with info products? And if so what do you write in the subject line to get people to click on your link?

    Hi Jon,
Thanks for stating this so simple and clear.

I believe it's fair to say, that if you go for just a few rare key words or phrases, you will get high conversion, but on a relative low total trafic. Which means, that you must pick affilliate products with high payouts.

But all in all; I agree with you that it will often be worth the time invested. Great post, thanks.

I assume you used some sort of software that had a free trial, but people could buy/upgrade to the full version of the software and this is why you advertised for "FREE product" in your domain title tag? Was this product from the RegSoft Affiliate network, or can you tell us which network the product came from? Thanks

  17. custom golf clubs on September 4th, 2008 3:39 pm

The numbers appear to stack up nicely and the potential great if you are willing to do a bit of research. As you say not something to be sneezed at. I guess the thing is is to have the vision to look at the bigger picture.

    Thanks

  19. Jonathan Leger on September 4th, 2008 3:42 pm

    To those who asked:

Yes, the software I used has a free version and a paid version, which is why I could advertise it with "GET IT FREE!" in the title.

To get better click through rates with info products or pay-first software, use something like "READ THIS FIRST!" — that will also grab searchers' attention.

    Jon

Although 3WL took my site from page 2 on some keywords to page 1 for about a year, it disappeared off the face of the earth 1 day after goog last visited. The site also had the keywords in the domain and had no other changes to text in months.

You'll likely not attribute my sites disappearance to 3WL, but my SEO guy felt there was a definite cause/effect due to it's linking nature after examining all potential factors.

Be willing to lose your sites if 3WL is the way you choose to go. Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it CAN'T happen down the road.

Are you using .com domains for these 1 page sites or pages within a more general type of site Jon…?

    Hi Jon,

First, thank you for all your reports I read them all .

Obviously you cannot give out the URL for the 2 page site and I understand since violets the TOS of your 3 way link network.

    BUT… anyone can see this…
I have done something similar with a PDF resource that I can give out. In my case it is a 1 Page “site”.

I am offering the Leak chapter as a free download which otherwise sells for $1 and it is a valuable resource. Then inside the leak chapter /version there is an offer for the entire resource for $7. The page ranks well for the keyword “instantcashleaked” ( No 2 on first page in Google)

This and a small list of customers made me 17 sales X $7 each in 3 weeks. It took 3 days to get listed in Google because of my site good ranking I guess and the very targeted words (product name + free)

    Jon,

In 3waylinks… it's said that before submitting a site, one needs to have at least 2 pages of a website already indexed in G, in order to being accepted into the 3way… and i understand you got away with this since it's your network hehe… but… could others do the same if only had a 1 page (homepage) website indexed in G?

    Great Post,
I have seen this tactic used many times, and overall it is certainly proven , given that you have a product that is popular and fresh,

How many times do you see other ads with the word free in their pitch which invariably means a trial period, or for the unregistered version of the digital product. The purchaser is always curious what the full version will give him, and if its good enough will buy.

I tried putting in a one page site into 3waylinks.net but it was declined due to a requirement to have two indexed pages. My site was only one page (its a landing page) and it is not indexed yet. Once it is though would it be accepted into 3waylinks.net?

Thanks for the great post, inspiring.

I actually just set up my first complete review page for a Clickbank product. I mean, I have set up pages before, but only very short ones.

I have always heard that a longer sales (or review) page converts better than very short ones. Is this true from your experience, or does it really just depend on the type of product being sold or the specific niche? I guess I should just test both to be sure.

This is an excellent way for someone getting started to get some experience and make some money without any risk.

    Also the scale is interesting.

If you put up 3 of these sites a week for 3 months that would be 36 sites.

At $100 a month from each site that $3,600 a month in sales.

Costs might be around $500 a year for domain names and hosting or less than $50 a month.

So if you maintain that $100 a month per site you'd be making $3,500 a month profit…a full time living.

Of course the numbers probably won't be that good for every site.

You might expect to make maybe a quarter to a third of these sales on average or $875 to $1,200 a month (you could get lucky and do a lot better with some sites as well).

But you can still keep setting up these sites and have over 150 sites after a year (a potential income of $3,600 to $15,000 a month.

What you've shared here is exceptionally valuable for those who take action on it.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

Thanks for sharing this with your list. I have been looking at your 3WayLinks service for a while now. One question I had was does each site having links pointing to it, need its okay link pages?

    By this I mean:

I have a primary site, and a secondary site (perhaps a .info). If I want to improve the page rank and SEO results on my Primary site, and dont want to link out from it, can I have the links page on the secondary site (point out), and all the incoming links pointing into my primary site?

its sound promising john, but why the visitor who looks for free software end up paying a fee??

and why this visitor who want free software change their intention to buy software? thx

  62. Justin on September 5th, 2008 6:17 am

Bob, some affiliate products that are software downloads will often allow people to download a free or trial version. Then after the trial expires or the user wants to upgrade the affiliate (Jon in this example) will get a commission.

Of course not all affiliate products will allow free offers, but what Jon is showing with choosing low competition keywords, and easily ranking is more important than the fact he is using the "free" method in this example. You could do just as well by using a title like [PRODUCT NAME] - What You Need to Know! or somthing like that.

    Jon,

I got to say this is not something that had occurred to me. Most of the products I look to promote are too competitive for this to work.

It looks like it's time for me to rethink finding products that are less popular but still have a decent amount of searches for exact product names.

Once again, your timing is impeccable because I have recently launched a site with tons of products that vary in price from less than 50 dollars to over 2000 dollars. It would be well worth my time to research the mid-level products for exact searches.

    Keep up the good work,

    Jeff

    Hi Jon,

Simple, clear, effective - best things usually are…

    Questions:

    1) To be included in 3WL we need 2 pages listed in google. How do you propose we do that asap in order to get in 3WL?

    2) What about "Privacy" "Contact" "Terms of Use" pages - will they help us rank well and get included?

    Cheers

This sounds very interesting, although a but vague. I would love to hear more. Any chance that you will be doing a case study?

Thank you for your wonderful tip. I always look forward for your mails. Your mails contain very useful tips and I have always enjoyed making more profits with your valuable suggestions.

    Hey Jonathan,
I just brought this very page of your site to rank on first page on Google 2 places below mine for the keyword “instantcashleaked” in 24 hours. Who said it is hard to get ranked in GOOG?

Sure there are tricks and my traffic Videos explain them well but it is also about being systematic and consistent.

Just though t I'd mention that.
    Cheers! Nicholas

That's simply amazing how you made such an incredible amount of money per visitor! And you did it just using the software that you created. You are truly an excellent Internet marketer.

  73. Luxury Wristwatches Aficionado on September 6th, 2008 10:59 am

Yes, it should be easy to get ranked for "instantcashleaked", but who would ever actually enter that in the Google search box? I don't even know what to ask or think about that. ????

  74. Stain Removal Info Source on September 6th, 2008 11:15 am

How can *WE* do what you did with just two pages — a sales page and a 3way page?
    1) Need two pages indexed in Go-ogle for inclusion in 3way. The 3way page doesn't count when we start. We would have just the one page (the sales page).
    2) More importantly, what about the page templates — header and footer? 3way requires that the 3way page use the code of other pages for header and footer (and sidebars) so the 3way page will have the "look" of the home page and other pages. Sales pages do not lend themselves to providing suitable header/footer for 3way.
I don't see how we can duplicate what you did.

  75. Future Cars on September 6th, 2008 11:22 am

    Hi Jon,
Great for your successful case study with your 2 site page. But, I wonder to know the result if I use 1 domain wordpress.org blog for 50 or more products. My opinion, this is more efficient. But It needs experimenting. Thanks for inspiring post.

  76. Garry on September 6th, 2008 3:57 pm

    Hi Jon,

I would like to echo Brian's point. How can we use this method if a site already has to have two pages indexed in Google before you are even allowed to use 3WL? Seems like a catch 22 to me?

  77. Need web hosting? 1 month for 1 cent + FREE software! on September 7th, 2008 5:14 am

    Hi Jon,

I have given this more thought and I have come to the conclusion that you're not really doing the service (3-way links) a favor by adding this blog post.

I was under the impression that 3-way links was designed as a quality network. However, now you are encouraging people to submit one-page, no-frills made-for-adsense sites and this is bound to affect the quality of the links. Why on earth would you want to do this for the sake of getting a few more people to subscribe to the service?

If you feel you can't answer this question publicly, I understand. But feel free to send me a response by email as I am considering giving 3-way links a try.

    Regards,

    Nick

  78. Dan Walter on September 7th, 2008 3:14 pm

Short answer.. these aren't AdSense pages. Re-read what Jon wrote. He only used AdSense as a benchmark.

  79. Jonathan Leger on September 7th, 2008 4:08 pm

    Nick:

What's wrong with small two-page sales-letter sites that they shouldn't be used in the link exchange process? If you have some proof that links from these sites aren't valuable, please share it. I have seen no such proof (but have seen proof to the contrary).

  80. Need web hosting? 1 month for 1 cent + FREE software! on September 7th, 2008 6:51 pm

    Jon,

I don't have any proof that one or two page sites affect the quality of the links provided by such sites. However, I doubt very much whether Google would ever regard such a site as an 'authority' site. And we all know that not all inbound links are created equal, don't we?

If you really have seen some proof that inbound links from such sites are beneficial, why not share your findings with us? I would like to know how you can be so certain that links of this type have resulted in increased Google rankings.

    Thanks.

    Nick

    Nice article Jon :)

I love Google's new keyword external tool - the keyword count seem pretty reliable (after testing some of them against live Adwords).

Would an indexed 'privacy policy' count as the 2nd page for 3WL?

  82. Welly Mulia on September 9th, 2008 12:46 pm

    Jon,

Creating numerous affiliate sites like you mentioned definitely is a way to make some good money, provided if you know what you are doing.

Your post outlines the methods which have proven profitable for you (which I believe will be profitable for most), so thanks for sharing.

  83. Kelly Cal on September 9th, 2008 4:13 pm

Your system is really good, i think. I will try your advice on some of my sites for sure. 3 way links looks really revolutionary.

    Jon,

Thanks again for the great case study.

I checked out your site the other day, and couldn't believe how simple the 2-page layout is. But…if it works…

I'm impressed that you've given away so much for free.

  85. Kurt on September 11th, 2008 2:26 am

    Jon,

Thanks a lot for the post. I'm just starting out to build my own blog networks and finding the right/profitable niche is the biggest trouble I encounter. Could you shed some light on how you find the niche/the software? What tools do you use? and does the domain name related to the product you promote in this case study? thanks!

    Hi Jonathan,
I already use your system more than 2 week but no significant traffics. What should I do? Change the keywords or wait until 2 months later?

    Thx,

  93. Scott on September 22nd, 2008 12:15 pm

    Hi John,

I like the whole concept but you are forgetting to mention that the people that use your 3waylinks system must have at least 2 pages indexed in Google before we qualify for the links system. So we will not get the same fast results as you since we need to make three pages and wait for Google to index the first two.

    Thanks,

    ~SG

    John,

The system is great and motivating for anyone wanting to setup a site that makes money within a certain space of time.

Just got to get a few one way links too and I'm sure the concept will work.

  96. The Golden Thread Review on October 1st, 2008 4:11 pm

I would think that if Google is indexing these sites and ranking them well, there must be some positive link quality coming from the sites, as there must also be some positive link juice going to the sites. It only makes sense.

Great Info!! Although I always read ur posts but this is the first time I give comment. Can't wait for ur adsense article…

  99. Captain Dave on October 3rd, 2008 7:38 pm

First, a comment to Jonathan, thanks for a great post!
My second comment is for all the comments that seem never to be happy that every single detail is not explained, even though you give valid reasons for why "names have been changed to protect the innocent". It is a fact that most people use either their left or right side of the brain most of the time… If you want to succeed in internet marketing, you must learn to use both sides. Preferably at the same time!
Jonathan, exactly how much would you charge me if I sent you my laptop and and account information so you could setup my websites and market them for me. Or better yet, I am willing to send you my paypal address and you could just deposit your earnings off a couple of sites directly for me.
    Thanks again.
    Captain Dave

And don't forget, if you are able to capture the customer's contact details, this $99 can multiply as you introduce them to other products and services in their market. The lifetime value will be much higher - making the payback on this method even more appealing.
