Web Data Parser adds ad-hoc data extraction and more automation!
December 26, 2008
I have to admit it. I'm completely jazzed about Web Data Parser. It's one of the most sophisticated tools I've developed to date, and I think it has a very broad range of use.
Thanks to the incredible feedback of the more than 180 comments I received on the first two blog posts about WDP, I've added an additional set of features that will blow you away:
- Ad-Hoc Data Extraction
Web Data Parser is no longer limited to extracting data from plain-old fixed-column tables. I've written a smart algorithm that figures out the "shape" of the data in a variety of kinds of tables and parses the data accordingly.
This means extracting product data from sites like ShopZilla and BizRate, or home data from Realtor.com, or search results from Google — just about anything!
You have got to watch the video to appreciate this new feature.
- Following "Next" Links
Web Data Parser now has the ability to look for "Next" links on the page and "click" those links to get to the next page of data, then extract the data from the next page, look for another "Next" link, etc. This saves you loads of time in the many instances where there is more than one page of results.
To see these features in action, watch the new video on the WDP homepage:

Web Data Parser Update: It's much more powerful!
December 18, 2008
If you saw the demo video for my initial beta version of Web Data Parser and left feedback, than you very much!
In case you're not sure what Web Data Parser is, it's a powerful tool lets you extract the data from any table on any web page and save it in a useful format (CSV for spreadsheets, TSV for databases, and as an HTML table). It also will extract the links and link text from ANY section of any page you choose.
I've added a number of great features since the initial beta video. They are:
- The ability to automate submitting forms and extracting data from the resulting page.
- The ability to select the table columns you want to export.
- The ability to save the data filtering settings you select so you can easily reuse them later.
- The ability to have WDP filter duplicate records out of the data when appending data to a file.
Ready to see these powerful features in action? Then click here to view the new video!
I hope to make the tool available next week, but at the latest it should be out the first week in January.
Please be sure to come back and leave your thoughts and ideas in a comment.

Preview my new web data parser!
December 10, 2008
I'm always needing to extract data from web pages that aren't setup to export the data: keyword data, link data,
traffic data, you name it.
What I've always done in the past was write a script or a quick application that was designed specifically to extract data from a particular page or set of pages. If that sounds like a lot of work — it is, though the value of that data made it worthwhile.
I finally got smart and said, Hey! I'm doing this all the time. Why not create a tool that can extract data from just about any table from any web page?
Thus Web Data Parser was born. This powerful tool lets you extract the data from any table on any web page and save it in a useful format (CSV for spreadsheets, TSV for databases, and as an HTML table). It also will extract the links and link text from ANY section of any page you choose.
This tool is not ready for release yet, being in the beta stages. I'm wanting to get your opinions and ideas for how to make the tool better. I want to find out what functionality and features YOU need in a tool like this.
So click here to the preview video.
Then leave your thoughts and comments and suggestions below.
